Chukars Sweep Hawks in Split Doubleheader

BOISE, ID - In a split nine-inning doubleheader, the Idaho Falls Chukars (24-20) swept the Boise Hawks (16-28) winning Game One 16-5 and taking Game Two 4-2 on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium, The doubleheader sweep ends the Chukars five-game losing skid, and puts the Chukars ahead of Boise in the Idaho Transportation Department Highway series five games to three. 

GAME ONE

The Chukars opened the scoring against Abbot Haffar (L, 0-1) on a two-run double from Calvin Estrada in the first inning to make it 2-0. Dusty Stroup drove in Estrada on a sac fly to put the Chuks up 3-0.

This lead did not last long as in the home half, Boise tagged Chukars starter Sam Kornstad with five runs on a three-run homer from Juan Teixiera, a solo homer from Jacob Cruce and an RBI double from Ryan Walstead to lead 5-3.

Idaho Falls took the lead in the third inning. Estrada crushed a grand slam to left field, his second grand slam of July and 11th homer of the seasons to put the Chukars up 7-5. Jose Reyes scored Stroup on a single to grow the lead 8-5. 

Two RBI doubles from Hunter Hisky and Estrada in the fourth put the Chukars up 10-5, chasing Haffar from the game. Boise decided to put position player Haloa Dudoit on the mound, who gave up a no-doubter two-run homer to Stroup that opened up the game, 12-5. 

Stroup would later blast a second homer, a three-run bomb to center field in the sixth against another positon player, Raymond Gil for his 12th homer of the season. Stroup finished 3-4 with six RBI, Estrada would knock in seven runs in the 16-5 win.

Alex Fishberg (W, 1-0) earned his first win as a Chukar, tossing a season long five innings and a third of scoreless baseball with three strikeouts and no walks, allowing only two hits.

GAME TWO

Facing Ian Kahaloa (L, 1-4) in the first, Brendan Hueth ledoff the game with a single to bring Steve Barmakian to the plate. Barmakian belted a towering homer that just made it over the right field wall for a home run. The homer is Barmakian's second of the season, his first since May 25 against the Hawks back on Opening Day.

The 2-0 lead didn't last long as Boise tied it up against Jake Binder on an RBI double and single, making it 2-2.

An infield single from Rick Phillips in the fourth that scored Reyes gabe the Chukars their second lead of the ballgame, 3-2 over Boise.  An Estrada double knocked in Barmakian in the fifth to cap the scoring, 4-2. 

Victor Rodriguez (W, 1-0) came to the mound for Binder in the third. Rodriguez went six innings out of the Chukars bullpen, his longest outing this season. He allowed no runs over his six innings of work, working around four Boise hits, walking one and striking out four in a great performance on the mound.

The reigning North Divison Pitcher of the Week, Nate Jenkins (SV, 3) took over in the bottom of the ninth, and worked around a two-out single to earn his third save of the 2022 campaign and secure the doubleheader sweep for the Chukars.

The series continues tomorrow with first pitch schedueled for 7:05 p.m. Idaho Falls will roll out Joe Slocum (3-3, 6.05 ERA) and the Boise starter is TBD. The game can be heard on KSPZ The Sports Zone.
